I have just updated our blog with the day in Zion and video's of the whole Valley Road + Mount Carmel Highway 9.
Enjoy -
Bryce was great indeed but also The Wave and Canyonlands and the Million Dollar Highway and...and...and...and...

It was the first time we were in the Southwest in winter but it was an unforgettable experience
The red rocks with the snow and always a cloudless sky was justAngels Landing was very icy and snowy indeed, but with good shoes and traction cleats it was no problem. The advantage is that you are all alone up there in winter so you can hold the chains all the time.
For me the hike to Double 'O Arch in Arches (update to come in our blog) was far more dangerous because you are also walking on a ridge in snow and ice but...without chains to hold on -
I'm updating our blog of last December and came to our day in Zion. It was a great experience to be there in winter and climbing to Angels Landing.
Zion Canyon from Angels Landing
Angels Landing...walking on a ridge...one of these day I will also post all the roadvideo's of the Valley Road on our blog. It's quite exceptional to drive the Valley Road all the way and in a great winter landscape.

The Southwest in winter
Today we were again (after last April) at The Wave (with snow), yesterday we won the Lottery in Kanab. We flew with the DJI through the Wave : great video (will be posted later at our blog)
The past days we did Angels Landing in the snow . We were all alone in Zion and yesterday the same in Bryce : we saw only 10 cars .
Tomorrow we are heading to Moab. -
thanks Ulrich, but we drove the Johnston Canyon Rd last year (due to closure of the Cottonwood Canyon) and we did not find it a "fantastic scenic road" , anyway not to drive it one more time
-
I know about the movie set, but we would just pass for the red surrounding rocks. But I think you are right and perhaps it's not worth the sidestep at all, and we'de better go straight to Edmaiers Secret...

Rudi -
Thanks a lot for those 2 links

Next month (Dec 14th) we’re heading to the SW again and I was wondering if anybody has driven the BLM 431 to Sidestep Canyon lately.
We toke this road in April 2012 to go to the Wahweap Hoodoos, even then it was an “Administrative Road” already but we trespassed the sign ...
No I’ve read that the road might be controlled by Rangers and the fines could be high.Answers in German are not problem.
PS : I've also contacted "usa-photo/Wolfgang" by mail about this issue.

Vielen Dank, Toni

I hope this list of our videos of backroads can help to decide whether or not to drive one.
Please note that all videos are NOT representative for the current state of those roads. You should inform you before driving them and drive with care.
You can see here an example of a dirt road of which the conditions changed dramatically within a few hours. In the morning everything was hard and frozen but after a couple of hours of sunshine it became extremely muddy.
Fortunately this time there was a friendly German couple who helped us out of the dirt. But this might not happen every time...Dirt roads
